Why did the Japanese conducted sick medical experiments on American POWs?

I have seen reports of the Japanese using B-29 American airmen for vivisection experiments. These experiments were conducted while the airmen were alive. One of them involved a Japanese doctor making and an opening in the skull and inserting a knife inside the brain to see when the POW would die.
